Tally to Zoho Books migration, reconciled to the rupee

Masters, opening balances and open invoices moved, checked against your trial balance, and ready for GST.

Moving accounting software mid-year sounds risky, and done carelessly it is. Done properly, it's a planned cut-over: pick a date, move what you need, reconcile it to your last trial balance, and switch your team over with the old books still available for reference. We do the export, cleaning, import and reconciliation, then set up GST, e-invoicing and payments in Zoho Books so your first month on the new system is a normal one.

Why businesses move from Tally to Zoho Books

  • Access from anywhere. Owners, accountants and CAs work in the same books, online, with role-based access.
  • Connected to sales. Zoho Books links to Zoho CRM, so invoices come from won deals instead of retyped spreadsheets.
  • Built-in e-invoicing. Zoho is a registered GSP, so e-invoices are pushed to the IRP from inside Zoho Books.
  • Online collections. Invoices carry payment links through gateways such as Razorpay, and payments are recorded automatically.

Tally remains a capable product, and for some businesses it's still the right one. Read our honest comparison →

Choosing what to migrate

The biggest decision is how much history to bring. We help you and your CA choose:

  • Opening balances only

    What moves
Chart of accounts, customers, vendors, items, and balances as on the cut-over date
    Best when
You're switching at the start of a financial year or quarter and Tally stays available for history
  • Opening balances plus open transactions

    What moves
The above, plus unpaid invoices and bills, so receivables and payables ageing stays accurate
    Best when
    Most mid-year switches
  • Full transaction history

    What moves
All vouchers for an agreed period
    Best when
You need detailed history in one system for audit or reporting; involves more time and checking

How the migration works

Zoho's own migration guidance for Indian businesses is a report-based process: export your data from Tally, then import it into Zoho Books module by module. We follow that sequence and add the checks that make it safe.

  1. Agree the cut-over date with you and your CA, ideally the start of a month or quarter.
  2. Export from Tally: masters (chart of accounts, taxes, customers and vendors, items), voucher data, the stock summary and the trial balance as on the cut-over date.
  3. Clean and map: merge duplicate ledgers, standardise customer and vendor names and GSTINs, and map Tally groups to the new chart of accounts. Sundry debtors become accounts receivable; debit notes become vendor credits.
  4. Set up Zoho Books: organisation profile, GSTINs, taxes, chart of accounts and module preferences.
  5. Import masters: chart of accounts, customers and vendors, and items with opening stock.
  6. Add bank and credit-card accounts. This must come before opening balances.
  7. Enter opening balances from the trial balance with the migration date matching the report date, and import open receivables and payables.
  8. Import transactions where agreed, in order: projects, purchases, sales, then manual journals.
  9. Sync and reconcile: sync backdated transactions with the opening balances, then reconcile.
  10. Configure GST, e-invoicing, bank feeds and Razorpay (see Zoho Books implementation).
  11. Train and go live, with Tally kept read-only for reference.

How we reconcile

Before you raise a single live invoice, we check and share in writing:

  • Trial balance in Zoho Books against Tally as on the cut-over date, account by account.
  • Receivables and payables ageing by customer and vendor.
  • Bank balances against statements.
  • Stock quantity and value where inventory is tracked.
  • GST ledgers (input credit and output liability) against your returns and books.
  • Opening Balance Adjustments account at zero, with total debits equal to total credits.

Common problems we fix along the way

  • Duplicate or near-duplicate ledgers for the same customer.
  • Missing or wrong GSTINs on parties.
  • Suspense balances nobody has cleared.
  • Items with no HSN or SAC code.
  • Stock values that don't match the books.

Frequently asked questions

[1]Which versions of Tally can you migrate from?

We migrate from Tally data exported as reports and masters, which covers the versions in common use, including Tally ERP 9 and TallyPrime.

[2]Can we switch mid-year?

Yes. Mid-year switches are common. We bring opening balances and open transactions as on the cut-over date, and your CA can still prepare year-end accounts from Tally history plus Zoho Books.

[3]Will our GST returns be affected?

Not if the cut-over is planned. We align the cut-over with a return period and check the first return prepared from Zoho Books with your accountant before filing.

[4]Do we lose access to our Tally data?

No. Keep your Tally data in read-only use for reference and audit. We don't delete anything.

[5]How long does a Tally migration take?

It depends on the number of companies and GSTINs, the history you bring and how clean the data is. We give you a dated plan after reviewing your Tally data.

[6]Can you migrate inventory?

Yes. Items and opening stock move with quantities and values. If you need warehouses, batches or serial numbers, we'll recommend whether Zoho Books or Zoho Inventory fits.

[7]Who checks the numbers?

We reconcile every balance listed above and share the workings with you and your CA for sign-off before go-live.
